The Start
There are two formal car parks within the village of Buttermere: the National Park Authority facility beyond the Fish Hotel, GR174169, and the National Trust enclosure on the west side at GR174172.
Should you wish to savour the lakeside stroll at walk’s end, getting to grips with the ascent of Fleetwith Pike at the outset, then use the small car park sheltered by a copse of pines at Gatesgarth Farm (pay meter), GR194150. It is located on the west side of Honister Pass at the foot of Gatesgarthdale. In high summer the farmer opens a meadow for the inevitable increase in demand.
